A "flash" of any plating is generally a very thin coating, Fred. I have seen applications called flash chrome plating which consisted of depositing the chrome directly on a steel substrate (as in hard chrome) but only plating for 30 seconds or so, as in decorative chrome plating. This was done on saw blades to reduce the friction.
